Currently there are thousands of members of the Holy Prophet's (S.A.W.) family who are subject to abject poverty. However they are not able to ask for or receive a charitable donation of Sadqah or Zakat due to teachings of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.). Please refer to Hadith provided below.

It is narrated by Abu Hurraira (R.A.) that Imam Hassan (A.S.) (the Grandson of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) took a Date from a basket of Dates given in Sadqa/Zakaat. Upon seeing him do this;
​The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) said:​
"Expel it from your mouth, Don't you know that Muhammad's (S.A.W.) family should not eat Zakaat (Charity)".
However, The family of The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) is able to accept gifts and gestures of love and goodwill from others. Gifting and showing of love and care through the practice of exchanging gifts is strongly encouraged in Islam.
